The disastrous mistake UX designers do in job interviews

Imagine the following scenario: you and I haven’t met, but we recently got in touch to collaborate on a project. We decided to meet up to discuss things so we grab a cup of coffee in a local coffee shop. — I present you my views on the project and ask you a bunch of questions. You answer and share your thoughts, but only on the things I ask about. Then, I realise that the conversation has been quite one-sided so I try to change that and say “okay, do you…

How I increased my salary by 500% in my design career

I got my first job at 25. I was fresh out of college and really glad to have landed a job at a bank that had its headquarters in my hometown. They later told me that there were more than 150 candidates lined up for it. The salary was very good for the living standards in Slovenia back at the time but I left only 18 months later. I realised that if I wanted to build a career in design I needed to move abroad. So I did.

How to evaluate the UX maturity of a company

Something wasn’t right. I had just received the work contract to review and the name of the role stated throughout was only “designer.” But it was the job that would finally allow me to move to London, something that I had wanted for a long time, so I ignored my gut feeling and signed the contract. — I was presented with this opportunity in the summer of 2015. Until that point, I had spent two years living in Germany and working for an early-stage startup in Luxembourg. It was the job that I moved abroad for. Now, I finally had the chance to move to London and…

How to use huge type on the web

Last week’s post looked at websites that dared to use huge type and did it well. With this week’s post I’ll explore what it is that works well about the huge type on these websites and establish guidelines and recommendations for using huge type on the web. — This is part two of the Huge Type blog post series. Here you can read part one: Huge type on the web. I’ve been advocating more daring and bolder use of typography on the web ever since I started the Better Web Type project. Picking a sans-serif font for titles…

Huge type on the web

Big bold type makes a statement. I’ve always been fascinated with minimalistic, typography-focused design. Especially when the composition is proportionally aligned with a grid and when it includes big, even huge titles. — This is part one of a two-part blog post series. In this one, I explore huge type in print, look for similar examples on the web, and try to find out what is it that works well about these designs. …

Why designers quit

Why did you quit your last job? This was the main question in my recent study I did with designers. I received 156 responses to my survey, most of them were from Product/UX designers, second and third in number of responses were graphic designers, and web designers. Let’s dive into the results! — 53 percent of designers who responded to my survey were UX/Product Designers, around 17 percent were graphic, 9 percent web designers, 6 percent design generalists, 6 percent UI and visual designers, and around 4 percent were design managers. I have to admit that I’m surprised by these numbers as I…

Website redesign: How I evolved my personal website

I launched my new website in May after taking a long break from my personal business. Taking a few steps back helped me realise what I needed to do to be more productive and efficient. I needed a new website that would elevate my personal brand and be a hub for everything I do. Here’s a short story about how I evolved my personal website. — This post was originally published on my private blog where I write about design, remote work, minimalism, and life in general. Remote work is not for everyone

Designers can’t do their job properly if they aren’t in the same room with the people they work with. Good collaboration is preconditioned by collocation. — This post was originally published on my private blog where I write about design, remote work, minimalism, and life in general. Join my mailing list to get future posts in your inbox! That’s what I used to believe. In fact, I believed it so much that I turned my life…

All you need is 5 fonts

There weren’t as many web fonts to pick from when I started my freelance career in the early 2000s, still I was always overwhelmed by the number of fonts to choose from. With no formal education in design or typography, my choices were uninformed and limited. — It’s kinda funny to look back and realise that it was harder for me to choose fonts when there were fewer to choose from than now. I had moved away from being a freelance graphic designer in the years since then, but I still do branding, web design, and graphic…

Why I don’t do Black Friday sales

This is the period when I usually receive a couple of emails in which people ask me if I’ll have a Black Friday sale for my book. My answer is always “no, I don’t do Black Friday sales” and then I never hear back from them. They never ask why but I decided to write this post and share my thoughts. — Black Friday is often referred to as the “consumerism holiday” and I can’t help myself but this sounds so wrong to me. The level of consumerism that we got to in the world today is absurd. Maybe I think that because of my minimalist mentality and lifestyle. Minimalism is something…
